How I got into Photography

Updated: Apr 12

Hi, I’m Darren.

I’ve always had a bit of an interest in photography—mostly through the camera on my phone, capturing little moments that caught my eye. But it wasn’t until recently that photography took on a much deeper meaning for me.

A Gift From My Dad

My dad was massively into photography. He loved everything about it—from the gear to the creative process. A year ago, he passed away, and among the many emotions that followed, I found myself holding onto something very personal: his camera equipment.

Now, I own a Canon 800D and around nine lenses—tools he cared for and used with passion. In a way, continuing his hobby helps me feel closer to him. It’s more than just taking pictures now; it’s carrying something of him forward.

My Growing Kit (and Curiosity) and a gift from Mum

Since then, I have been lucky enough to own my first full-frame mirrorless professional camera: the Canon R6 Mark ii thanks to my mum who wanted to do something positive for me.

Right now, I’m diving into the creative side of photography. It’s been a fun and sometimes challenging journey of learning how to see light differently, how to frame the world, and how to tell a story with every shot. But after a year, within that period taking over 3500 photos I feel I have already come a long way. But this is a journey of continuous growth and improvement.

Photography & Mental Health

Photography has become more than a creative outlet for me—it’s become a way to manage my mental health. I’ve lived with depression for several years, and this craft offers me calm, purpose, and space to process.

I truly believe that any positive step, no matter how small, can make a big difference. Photography gives me those steps. The Focus Theory. Some days it’s just about picking up the camera and going for a walk. Other days, it’s about challenging myself creatively and solving little problems with light and composition.

Progress Over Perfection

One thing I’ve learned? Photography, like life, isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Every photo teaches me something. Every mistake is part of the process. And I’m okay with that. The photos that seem to get the most likes I think are just ok, and many of my personal favourite shots only seem to register with me. And I’m okay with that too.

Life Outside the Frame

When I’m not taking photos, I enjoy walking our dog, spending quality time with my wife, getting lost in a good book, listening to music, and riding my motorcycle. Life’s all about the little things—and for me, photography is one of the most meaningful.
